Program for the Sarah D. Leibowits performance, a benefit for the Charlie B. adoption fund. A description of the situation reads: Lee Balser, a psychology assistant in Newark who started the gay men's support group here at Denison, is trying to adopt a 7-year-old boy. The boy, Charlie, has been shuffled between various foster parents and now may finally have a chance at a loving home. Lee filed for adoption in November of 1987. The adoption was approved in May of 1988, but before arrangements were completed to move Charlie, the Licking County Children's Services put a stay on the adoption. In September, the decision approving Charlie's adoption was reversed, the grounds being that Lee is gay and living in an established relationship with his partner. Now Charlie is again under foster care, with Lee's sister, while Lee fights for custody. This precedent setting case will be heard by the Ohio Supreme Court, most likely, this fall.
